Regardless of the time of year, camping can be extremely
enjoyable and a lot of fun. However, the amount of fun involved depends largely
on your having the appropriate camping gear at the right place. Remember that
camping gear that suits warmer conditions does not translate well into winter
use.
The following items should be considered when purchasing
your winter camping gear. A good tip is to keep in mind that it is easier to
buy discount camping gear that is winter-related during warmer seasons.
1) Insulated Sleeping Bags
It is not a given that insulated sleeping bags can handle
winter conditions, but it is a good start. Find one that has multiple
insulation layers and is water resistant. Your comfort depends the type of
material used for the layer that touches your skin, which is typically moisture
wicking.
2) Portable cooker/heater
There is not much that beats a warm soup, or warm food of
any kind, during a cold camping trip. Aside from cooking and heating your meals
when a campfire is obsolete, these are also capable of warming your tent.
Though those used in tents need to be specifically approved for tent usage and
have a safety turn-off feature.
3) Four-Season Tent
You will need the appropriate tent to camp in the winter, as
these have more fastening options, wider pole diameters, better ventilation and
more space for storing your gear. The poles and guy-lines are necessary to hold
your tent down during winter winds.
