A knife may seem like just a blade and a handle to a person who lacks corresponding expertise. However, a knife has several components. Whether it is a cook’s knife, a pocket knife or a hunting knife, it is advisable that you familiarize yourself with the knife terminology before you set out to look for discounts such as hunting knife deals.

Below is a list of important knife terminology:

Blade -- The blade is the reason we buy a knife. It has a couple of sub-components to know:

Belly -- the arched part of the shaper edge that lies towards tip of the blade. It helps increase the surface area of the cutting edge.

Spine -- the blunt side of single-edged knives. It is the opposite side of the sharper edge.

Handle -- The handle of the knife is the part at which you hold the knife. It is crafted from metal and fitted with a thermoplastic mold made of materials such as Kraton or Zytel.

Rivets -- Rivets are cylindrical studs that are used to fasten the thermoplastic molds onto the handle.

Finger Guard -- It is a component fitted between the blade and the handle to protect the fingers of the person using the knife.

Tang -- It is the part where the blade of the knife fuses with the handle.

Alloying Element -- Knives are usually carved from steel or aluminum. The manufacturers add chromium or nickel to steel/aluminum to increase the knife’s strength and make it resistant to rust.
